What exactly are derivatives?
Derivatives are new assets based on existing assets, that give the user a different asset to use.

Let’s discuss when it is appropriate to create and upload a derivative and when it’s not.

Let’s start with accepted derivatives.

  1. Smaller packs sorted by themes:
In order to not overwhelm the users, we recommend splitting big icon packs to smaller curated packs. When you have an icon pack of 200+ icons, we recommend splitting them into smaller packs of 30 icons, sorted by themes. For example, web icon pack, animals icon pack etc. Please note that the icons in those split packs may not repeat in other packs.

  2. Same characters, different context:
You may use the same character illustration in different environments. For example, a character using a laptop can fit in a business-oriented illustration with an office in the background, and can also fit a school themed pack with a classroom in the background of the illustration. Please note that cut out characters(Characters with a transparent background) may not be repeated in packs.

When are derivatives rejected, then?

  1. Different colors in illustrations or templates:
You may not submit the same illustration or graphic template in color variations. Instead, you should include all color versions in the same pack of illustrations or include color swatches in your project in order to give the user the ability to fully customize the template.

  2. Same asset, different formats:
When you have an asset in multiple formats you should group them together rather than uploading them as separate assets. For example - a graphic template in PSD and AI format, and Illustration in PNG and JPG format etc.. Each asset should only appear once in the catalog and include all options available for it in the same page.

  3. Print and Digital:
when you have an asset that is available for both printing and digital purposes, you should group them together into one submission. When uploading the asset you should list all formats available for this asset. If you want to add another version after the original one was already approved, you can email us and will enable to option to do so.

  4. Different branding:
When you have a graphic template that is branded in a certain way, you can’t use the same project and brand it differently when it has the same design, and works the same way. For example - if you have a Sports flyer, just changing the placeholder media, colors and text in the preview and calling it ‘Action flyer’ will not be enough to qualify as a new submission.

To sum it up, we highly encourage you to submit new and unique looking templates with every submission that follow the latest trends and use the latest techniques so that it fits as many users needs as possible.
